“Primal, bro…”

I started writing a couple different posts this morning and just couldn’t find a groove.

Ever have days like that?

Where your brain just doesn’t want to do the brain things?

Well instead of sending you a poor representation of my thoughts on strength training…

I figured I’d send you something short I’ve been thinking about lately.

I was listening to a podcast the other day and one of the guests used the word “primal” to describe how they try to live their life.

Which is when I stopped listening and changed to something else.

Why?

Because I’m becoming less and less tolerant for that particular brand of fitness bullshit.

And it’s not just the “primal” crowd – although they’re a really good example.

I’m just trying to be a little more intentional with the words I use and the ideas I spread into the world.

As a result, I’m finding myself less patient with those who either aren’t intentional with their message or who actively decide to spread bullshit into the ether.

If that guy actually wanted to live a “primal” lifestyle, then he could do that.

He could get rid of his electronics and go off the grid and hunt and fish and gather his food.

I mean, it’s extreme, but people do that and some of them are really happy living that way.

And that’s what he would do if he actually believed all the bullshit principles he said he did.

But instead, he lives in a multi-million dollar mansion where he makes content on social media and sells supplement subscriptions.

Primal, bro.

Didn’t realize our paleo ancestors had access to such a wide range of supplements…

And it’s not just that crowd.

All the different fitness camps have their own cults with their own versions of marketing that they use to prey on vulnerable people.

I’m sick of it.

I think fitness can be an incredibly beneficial thing for people.

It can help people live longer, healthier lives and give them opportunities to do more fun things like run up mountains or play tennis into their 70s or roll around on the floor with their grandchildren.

Yet it’s more often used as a way to sell useless supplements to desperate people.

And while I really dislike the people who do that shit, I’ll admit I’ve played my part in getting us to where we are in the current fitness environment.

By giving them attention, positive or not, they expand their reach and as a result, more people hear their message.

Which is why I just turned off the podcast the other day.

It’s also why I subscribe to fewer and fewer shows who choose to make their money that way and why I don’t engage with social media content – positively or negatively – that tries to push those buttons.

In a world where attention is currency, I’m becoming increasingly judicious about where I want to spend mine.

All to say…

Anybody who tries to sell you a “primal” supplements through a phone screen is full of shit.

The fact that we ever fell for that trend is insane.

And please just think an extra 2-3 seconds about the motivation behind some of these posts before buying into them.

Now I’m going to go take my dog to daycare and eat a handful of candy so I can do a speed workout.
